What You'll Learn and Why
If you don’t know my brain fog story, you can read it here.
Essentially I suffered from severe brain fog for 5 years and then finally healed myself. From there, I become obsessed with the brain, how it works and how to optimize it.
Here’s why I believe the brain is so interesting and important. I believe you will agree. Inside your skill lies the most complex structure in the universe. You’re pretty cool.
But how much do you know about it? How often do you take care of it? Do you know how to keep it healthy and happy?
What about optimizing it so you can do incredible things with this life? I damn sure didn’t.
Jeff Lichtman, a professor, starts off his courses by asking his students the question,
“If everything you need to know about the brain is a mile, how far have we walked in this mile?”
He says students give answers like three-quarters of a mile, half a mile, a quarter of a mile, etc.—but that he believes the real answer is “about three inches.” source.
We aren’t taught a whole lot about the brain past maybe it’s basic structure, and even that we forget almost immediately. The one tool we possess that allows us to do everything and we spend little time learning about how to optimize it. Not cool society.
Moran Cerf, a neuroscientist shares with Tim Urban (Author/creator at Waitbutwhy.com) an old neuroscience saying that points out why trying to master the brain is a bit of a catch-22:
“If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn’t.”
It’s truly fascinating to me that we have this unfathomably powerful tool in our skulls that allows us to do everything we do and more.
Some pretty cool things your brain allows you to do:
- Ride a bike
- Write a book
- Find amazing people, make deep connections
- Start a business
- Feel happy
- Have sex
- Play with your kids
- Play an instrument
- Have a life-changing thought
- Take action on the life-changing thought
- Dream
- Make a dream a reality
- Travel the world
- Think, move, feel, see hear, remember
- Speak and understand language
- Listen to stories from your elders, pass them along to your kids
- And so much more…
So much happens in the brain without you even knowing it. Take reading these words. If I broke down in detail exactly what needs to take place right now for you to focus your awareness here, read these words, understand them, remember them and put them to good use, it would take….well it would take way more time that you’re willing to give it, let’s put it that way.
We take these things for granted until we lose them. Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases can take away your ability to do even the simplest things.
Brain fog is very likely your body telling you that you may be headed in that direction if you don’t make a change.
I don’t tell you this to scare you, I tell you this to educate you.
Education and a true understanding of why we do anything is the driving force behind change.
I don’t want you to survive, I want you to thrive.
